Ironmaster Kennel has 30 years of experience in dog breeding and training. The kennel is owned by Gene and Sandy Maylock. Gene is an experienced dog breeder of many different breeds: Braque d'Auvergne, Rottweiler, Norwich Terriers and Large Munsterlander. He helped organize the Large Munsterlander Club of North America and was the President of the LM Club. Gene also organized the Nittany Chapter of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA). Gene loves to compete with his dogs in Shoot To Retrieve competitions. Gene and his dogs won the Pennsylvania State Pheasant Championship, The Northeast Regional Chukar Challenge, and the Central Pennsylvania Mixed Game Bird Competition. He also placed in many others. Some of Gene’s dogs are NAVHDA Utility Tested. Gene led dog training classes and continues to do individual dog training.
The Braque d’Auvergne is a French pointing breed. It is grouped with the Continental Pointers. These are versatile gun dogs that hunt a variety of game: fur, feather, and waterfowl. The Braque d'Auvergne has been bred for hunting and it doesn't take too much effort to bring out these natural abilities in this rare hunting dog. For the average North American hunter, this breed offers all the talent needed.
What we have been enjoying about the Braque d’Auvergnes in our home is their friendliness with people and other dogs, their natural hunting abilities and their ease of training. We have been using positive reinforcement in our training techniques, and if we need to discipline the dogs, one small leash pull or a stern voice is all it takes. The best example I can give for these dogs is “When the dogs are walking out in front of me, it is like I am driving a European sports car loaded with power and smooth handling to match that power.” The dog’s search pattern is in and out of gun range adapting to the cover we are hunting. Our dogs showed early point typical of a Continental Pointer. The dogs are natural retrievers and can play fetching games all day. They love being outside on a sunny day, however, our Braque d’Auvergnes are our house companions and enjoy being cuddled too. Our dogs’ sweet tempers have made them the ambassadors of our neighborhood. Some neighbors without other pets invite our dogs to their house for a good time of spoiling!
